Radiant barriers are designed for hot, sunny climates. They reflect heat before it enters, while foam absorbs heat that can still radiate into your garage.
Most tubular skylight installations are completed in a few hours. The exact timeline depends on your roof type, attic access, and how direct the tube path is from the roof to the ceiling.
Projects that involve tile roof adjustments, longer tube runs, limited attic space, or electrical add-ons may require additional time. After we review your roof and attic layout, we can confirm the expected installation timeframe before scheduling
Most solar attic fan installations are completed the same day. We arrive within the scheduled window, confirm placement and plan details, complete the roof integration and attic work, verify system operation, and clean the work area before leaving. Installation time may vary depending on roof material, attic layout, and selected options. After reviewing your attic and roof conditions, we can confirm the expected timeframe before scheduling
Solatube offers models and mounting systems for all common roof types, including shingle, tile, flat, and metal roofs.
Solatube solar attic fans operate independently from your home’s electrical system, requiring no wiring or additional energy. Maintenance needs are minimal, with most homeowners enjoying years of trouble-free operation.
Solatube ClimaSense™ models are designed to provide continued ventilation after sunset, addressing Tampa’s persistent evening humidity and heat.
By actively removing superheated air from your attic, a solar attic fan reduces heat transfer into living spaces and lowers the workload on your AC system.
Yes. If your garage is attached, less heat will transfer into your home, which can reduce the workload on your AC system.
No. The barrier adds minimal weight and won’t interfere with the balance or operation. If adjustments are needed, our installers handle them during the appointment.
No. The radiant barrier lines the inside of the garage door and does not block any natural light from windows or door windows.
The Solar NightLight has an integrated solar panel that collects and generates energy from the daylight coming down the Solatube™ system, recharging the two (2) onboard AA NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries. The Solar Electric NightLight has a sophisticated Dusk-to-Dawn Sensor that recognizes when there is not enough daylight (waning hours of the day). In return, the NightLight automatically turns on. This solar-powered NightLight includes two LED emitters requiring no bulb replacement over the life of the product.
Yes, Solatube Tubular Skylights can be installed horizontally or at an angle as long as the total tube run stays within product recommendations and the rooftop dome remains properly positioned to capture sunlight. This design flexibility lets you bring natural daylight into even challenging interior spaces without sacrificing performance.
Solatube systems are engineered with flexible tubing that allows for angled and non‑vertical runs. This means the tube can be routed horizontally through attic space or ceiling cavities when a direct vertical run from roof to ceiling isn’t possible. With the right configuration, you can bring daylight into interior rooms with limited roof access, clustered attic trusses, or other structural constraints.
Solatube Tubular Skylights are considered virtually maintenance free for typical residential use. Unlike traditional skylights, which often need periodic cleaning and resealing due to their size and direct exposure to the elements, Solatube systems use a compact, sealed design with highly durable materials. Their robust construction, sealed design, and lack of moving parts allow you to enjoy natural daylight in your home with little to no ongoing upkeep. For peace of mind, a quick visual check during routine roof maintenance is all that’s usually needed.
Here’s why homeowners find Solatube skylights virtually maintenance free:
For most homeowners, routine roof inspections are sufficient to ensure the Solatube dome remains free of debris. In areas with significant tree cover, it’s a good idea to check that the dome is not shaded or obstructed, as this can affect daylight capture.
The light coverage area for Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm Daylighting System) is approximately 200 square feet, and for a Solatube™ 290 DS (14in/350 mm Daylighting System) it is approximately 300 square feet. These estimated lighting areas are based upon an average 6′ (1.82m) tube length and 8′ (2.4m) ceiling height, with the dome being in direct sunlight. Light output will vary depending on the intensity of the sun. For example, there will be more natural daylight at mid-day than in the early morning or evening. Light output may also decrease as the length of the tube increases beyond the recommended distances.
Solatube™ Tubular Skylights vary in price based on the size, the addition of extension tubes and accessories, and different roof types. Prices include product plus installation by a Certified Installation Consultant. Call for exact pricing on the daylighting system that will best suit your home.
In everyday residential installations, the thermal performance of Solatube tubular skylights is typically comparable to or better than many traditional skylights because of the smaller roof opening and engineered features that limit heat transfer. Solatube tubular skylights are designed for energy efficiency and thermal control, but they do not use traditional “insulation” like rigid foam or batt insulation inside the light tube itself. Here’s what you should know about their thermal performance:
Yes, specific models and configurations of Solatube tubular skylights are impact rated. If impact resistance is required for building code or local zoning compliance in your area, look for the HVHZ‑rated Solatube tubular skylights or consult a Solatube Premier Dealer to specify the correct model.
Solatube Tubular Skylights are engineered to deliver bright, natural daylight over surprisingly long distances. The maximum recommended tube length depends on the model, but Solatube’s advanced Spectralight® Infinity tubing allows light to travel through long, angled runs with minimal loss in brightness or color.
For most residential applications, here are the official maximum tube lengths:
These limits ensure optimal daylight delivery for spaces like bathrooms, closets, hallways, kitchens, and living areas, even when those rooms are deep inside your home or far from the roofline. The 290 DS model is particularly well suited for larger rooms or for installations that require longer or more complex tube paths.
Why does tube length matter?
Longer tube runs allow you to bring natural daylight into rooms that don’t have access to exterior walls or are on lower floors. Thanks to Solatube’s highly reflective tubing, you can route the system through attics, around structural elements, or even down through multiple stories—without major light loss.
What affects the maximum tube length?
Installation flexibility:
Solatube extension tubes come in modular lengths and can be angled as needed, making it possible to daylight nearly any room. Most homes require much shorter tube runs, but having up to 20–30 feet of reach gives homeowners real flexibility in their remodeling or new build projects.
To answer this question we first need to understand what wavelengths of radiation are emitted through a Solatube™ Tubular Skylight. Solatubes utilize two technologies to eliminate UV radiation and reduce heat from infrared (IR) wavelengths from entering the building interior as follows:
The first technology is related to the domes. Solatube™ acrylic outer domes have special UV inhibitors designed to block 100% of UVB (280 to 315 nanometers), 100% UVC (100 to 280 nanometers), and 98.5% UVA (315 to 400 nanometers) rays.
The second technology is related to tubing. Spectralight Infinity tubing transmits the visible spectrum of light (400 to 760 nanometers). The infrared spectrum of light (above 760 nanometers) is not transmitted by the Spectralight Infinity tubing.
With this information in mind, the following subjects can be addressed:
Plant Growth
There are a few factors to consider when determining if a Solatube™ Daylighting System will have an effect on plant growth in conjunction with the above information. The first factor would be how much UV the particular plant will need for proper growth. Second, the size of the product you are using may impact how much light the plant will be able to obtain. It is also important to point out that the Solatube™ Daylighting System removes a majority of the infrared wavelengths, which only provide heat to the plants. This substantially reduces any heat-related stress problems that may occur with indoor plants.
Typically plant growth occurs between 400 and 1000 nanometers. Based on this data, it would be safe to say that in general, a Solatube™ Daylighting System will have a positive effect on plant growth depending on that particular plant’s UV requirements.
Solar Heat Gain
With the infrared blocking capabilities of the Spectralight Infinity tubing, removing greater than 50% of the heat from the infrared wavelengths (>900 nanometers) of the sun with every reflection on the tube surface, the Solar Heat Gain of Solatube™ products is greatly reduced, which in turn will reduce the air conditioning load requirement for the space being daylit. These technologies allow Solatube™ Daylighting Systems to provide the highest light output performance with minimal thermal impact.
UV Effect on Skin and Vitamin D
The different UV wavelengths affect skin in the following ways:
UVA – The lowest energy range, UVA causes little burning ordinarily, but it penetrates deeply, beyond the surface layer of the skin. Over long periods of exposure, UVA causes wrinkling and premature aging of the skin.
UVB – More energetic, the chief burning and tanning rays which area major factor in producing skin cancer, although not penetrating beyond the skin.
UVC – The most energetic, intensely burning rays. Fortunately, UVC is mostly absorbed by the earth’s sunscreen, the ozone layer.
Concerning Vitamin D it is synthesized in the skin when UV rays react with a compound within the skin between the 270-300 nanometers wavelengths, with peak synthesis between 295-297 nanometers. Based on this information the Solatube™ Daylighting Systems do not transfer the required UV for Vitamin D synthesis as it will block all of the UVB and UVC rays, which fall between the 100-315 nanometer range.
Note: The UV information in this article is specific to Solatube™ Daylighting Systems – other TDD products may not provide the same performance standards.
We offer a suite of Effect Lenses to adjust the light to soften or warm the light color. For those who prefer less light, we offer the Softening Effect Lens that creates a subtle, softer natural lighting effect. The optional Solatube™ Daylight Dimmer can also be installed to allow control of the light output. The Warm/Warm Softening Effect Lens enhances natural daylight by warming the light creating a color comparable to incandescent bulbs. Never use standard window tinting or any flammable material to block the incoming light. This is an extreme fire hazard. For the SolaMaster Series, we offer a secondary diffuser that fits under the dome to soften the light if necessary.
Choosing the right ventilation or daylighting system is important, but choosing the right partner makes all the difference.
